Gilson PIPETMAN® announces the release of PIPETMAN® L

Gilson is proud to announce the release of PIPETMAN® L, the latest innovation from Gilson PIPETMAN®, the pipetting standard for nearly 40 years.  PIPETMAN L is an adjustable volume pipette that features a Gilson patented volume locking system.  This GLP feature, among other features, meets the current needs of intensive pipette users who desire accuracy and precision without sacrificing comfort.  Once you lock the thumbwheel, the operating rod is no longer in contact with the counter assembly which is responsible for changing the volume; as you pipette, the volume cannot be accidentally changed – a concern in some manual pipettes.
PIPETMAN L boasts the most natural and patented tip ejection system that reduces forces through a pulley system offering low tip ejection forces with any brand of tip.  An adjustable tip ejector button has further improved the comfort of PIPETMAN L by adapting to both right- and left-handed users.
PIPETMAN L incorporates a newly engineered body yet keeps the legendary robustness, accuracy and precision of the PIPETMAN Classic.  An improved design with an enhanced hook feature reduces tension and fits naturally in your hand allowing users to increase productivity and pipette longer while using a lightweight and comfortable pipette.  The body consists of polypropylene giving an excellent compromise between lightness and robustness.  The piston assembly is composed of new seals, lighter springs, and high quality lubricant, drastically improving the pipetting, purge, and ejection forces and reducing the risk of Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI).
Offering two tip ejector styles, plastic and stainless steel, PIPETMAN L is perfect for both corrosive and non-corrosive samples. Both tip ejector styles are equipped with a clip ejector for convenient access to serviceable parts.
PIPETMAN L is available in a full volume range from 0.2µL-10mL in eight single channel models. GLP features include volume-locking mechanism, a traceable serial number, color-coded push-button that corresponds to matching Gilson tip packaging, and unique 2D identification code.  Like other PIPETMAN families, PIPETMAN L is fitted with a universal tip holder that allows for a secure fit of most leading brands of tips, so there is no need for a dedicated tip brand.  You asked, we delivered; comfortable pipette to help you increase your daily throughput without forfeiting accuracy and precision.

GILSON ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF THE N-GLYCAN TOOLKITs

Gilson, Inc. is proud to announce the release of an innovative and ’manually automated’ TOOLKIT to change the historically tedious and labor intensive process of N-Glycan analysis.  The Gilson TOOLKITs use the rapid N-Glycan sample preparation GlykoPrep™ Kit from ProZyme to provide an even more efficient and streamlined process with consistently reproducible results from the electronically tracked protocol.
The hassle of manually tracking each step in a paper booklet is eliminated.  Instead, the Gilson SD TOOLKIT and Gilson MD TOOLKIT utilize the tracking functionality of the duo-plate TRACKMAN™ pipetting tracker to guide glycobiologists through each and every step within the GlykoPrep protocol using text screens and lighted wells.  The use of the Gilson TOOLKITs eliminates the risk of errors caused by routine distractions.   Further increases in efficiency are directly related to letting the TRACKMAN keep track of which cartridges are loaded and processed, and using the foot pedal to advance the TRACKMAN protocol frees both hands, allowing consistent N-Glycan sample preparation in less than 3 hours.
“Confidence that the sample data is reliable was one of our main goals for the Gilson TOOLKITs.  Distractions, pipetting variability, training new glycobiologists, and laboratory documentation are no longer concerns when using the manually automated Gilson TOOLKITs,” explains Toni Hofhine, Director-Gilson Knowledge Center.  Day-to-day variation is significantly reduced with the use of the Gilson PIPETMAN disposable tips on either the PIPETMAN™ M or PIPETMAN™ Neo Multichannel pipettes to transfer samples into the AssayMAP® cartridges that are used throughout the protocol.  Currently available only to customers residing in the United States, the Gilson TOOLKIT simplifies the science of N-GLYCAN sample preparation and allows for ease in transitioning to a higher throughput per day; from 1 to 24 samples.

Gilson, Inc. 60 Years of History

Gilson has been a long standing scientific instrument manufacturing company since the 1950s when Gilson Medical Electronics began; through the 1970’s when the pipette division was created, and today as new products are being developed.

The Gilson Museum is being constructed in the foyer of Gilson’s main building. The company history will be preserved and displayed for guests and employees to enjoy.

Gilson employees assisted with many aspects of the project. Atika El Sayed organized, gathered memorabilia and oversaw the whole project. Larry Paskey re-assembled old units to make almost all of them work again. Lyle Rickman assisted with moving around heavy items and hanging portraits in the proper area. The Marketing Department restored old newspaper clippings and designed product and logo timelines to be hung in the museum.

Gilson has always been very innovative; we want to demonstrate this innovation to our visitors, encourage innovation, and remember the individuals who made this company successful for the past five decades.

Gilson's Green Thumb

Over the past few months, 27 Gilson employees have been working to make the world a greener place; or at least a little tastier.

Tucked behind Gilson’s main building, the first year of Gilson’s own community garden is flourishing. You will find a wide variety of produce is being grown – from tomatoes and peas to unique items such as kohlrabi and Indian mustard. There is even a plot with rose bushes!

“We’re a family of gardeners; we had an empty field, so why not?” Molly Gilson, Director of Operations-MLH, said. “It is neat to see different purposes for which people are growing things. They’re literally growing their lunches.”

Each participant is responsible for tending to their own assigned space, and many have volunteered to help with the overall garden by participating in various committees.

“It’s great to see everyone working together to make the garden a success, especially the willingness of the Chief Operating Officer to plunge in and work on the assembly issues,” Dean Sperry, Software Engineering Manager said.

Employees have gained a sense of camaraderie; everyone has provided gardening knowledge or physical labor to keep the gardens looking beautiful.

PIPETMAN® P-Then and now.

Gilson, founded in Middleton, WI in the 1950s, is the industry leader in manual and automated liquid handling. Dr. Warren Gilson developed PIPETMAN®’s unique volumeter in 1963 as an improvement to Gilson respirometers. Together with his son, Dr. Robert Gilson, they invented what became known as the PIPETMAN, the original adjustable-volume pipette, in 1972.

Since then PIPETMAN P has come a long way. P is constructed of quality materials, to ensure durability, accuracy and precision. The body of the pipette is made of strong PVDF plastic, which is resistant to harsh chemicals and limits the transfer of heat from your hand to the pipette. PIPETMAN P is the original world standard in accuracy and precision in pipetting. The pipette uses a unique dry seal technology, to ensure air-tightness and long-term performance without the use of grease on the piston. It offers an easy-to-read volumeter with a direct volume reading in decimal digits to prevent mistakes when setting the volume.

The PIPETMAN P has evolved over time; the first models did not have a tip ejector; so tips would have to be removed by hand. Today the P series PIPETMAN pipettes are equipped with a standard tip ejector; P2 and P10 models come standard with a dual position tip ejector for use with long (DL10) or short (D10) tips. The tip holder on the PIPETMAN is now universal and allows for a secure fit of most brands of tips, so there is no need for a dedicated tip brand.

For almost 40 years Gilson has continued in its commitment to provide innovative, quality products to researchers worldwide. The complete line of PIPETMAN pipettes and tips are available at www.pipetman.com.

Microman Saves the Lab!

Gilson’s Microman positive-displacement pipette is a superhero to any lab.

Microman is a life saver when it comes to problem liquids. Microman has the ability to pipette the most viscous or volatile samples without compromising accuracy and precision.

Microman’s muscles are made of highly resistant materials such as PVDF, a material that is resistant to aggressive chemicals. The pipette is suited with a color-coded push-button, which allows for easy identification of the Microman you are in need of, as well as corresponding Gilson capillary pistons (CPs). The pipette fits all hand sizes comfortably; the pipette will prevent cramping while pipetting. M10 and M100 Microman have an extra super power, they are fully autoclavable.

Gilson CPs, Microman’s favorite sidekick, have a disposable piston located inside the capillary tip. These CPs guarantee that no harmful samples will contaminate or damage the pipette.

Microman is not afraid of volatile liquids, such as Methanol and Hexane. With no air cushion to expand or contract, the aspiration force in Microman remains constant. This allows you to pipette very volatile liquids without evaporation or leaking.

The pipette leaves a clean and empty tip after every aspiration, even with viscous samples such as glycerol. During dispensing the piston wipes the internal capillary wall, assuring accurate and thorough dispensing of any viscous sample.

Microman is the perfect pipette for corrosive and radioactive liquids. The disposable CPs isolate the pipette from samples and aerosols, thereby preventing sample cross-contamination. The piston seal prevents biohazardous, radioactive and corrosive aerosols from entering the pipette and damaging expensive internal parts.

Let Microman save your lab!

Gilson contributes to the Golden Pipetman® Award

The Golden Pipetman is an award given at the University of Minnesota to an outstanding microbiology, immunology and cancer biology (MICaB) graduate student each semester.

The student who receives this award shows great leadership skills and has contributed to the excellence of the MICaB program. The contribution can be in the form of publications, outside funding and service to the program.

The recipient of this award receives a golden Pipetman trophy given by the MICaB program, as well as Pipetman Starter kit that is donated by Gilson, Inc.

“The students do truly appreciate the kit and consider it an honor to receive the award,” Louise Shand, Program coordinator said.

Students are nominated for this award by fellow students or MICaB faculty. The recipient is chosen by the MICaB graduate committee members and past recipients of the Golden Pipetman award, who are still in the program. The recipient is announced at the MICaB student seminar series.

Gilson became involved with the Golden Pipetman Award at UMN in spring 2005, when a representative with Gilson in France, offered to send a kit each semester to the recipients of the Golden Pipetman Award.

“He was simply Googling and found the MICaB website,” Shand said. “He then contacted us with this great idea.”

The award started in fall 2001 as an idea from the Director of Graduate Studies at the time, Christopher Pennell. The objective was to recognize exceptional students for leadership, contributions to the program and publishing a paper in a high-level journal.
