2010 National Sales Meeting

Gilson Manual Liquid Handling (MLH) Department recently held their 2010 National Sales Meeting. Every year Gilson PIPETMAN Sales and Service Representatives come to Gilson, Inc. headquarters in Middleton, WI to attend. Key discussion at this meeting focused on two new Gilson PIPETMAN products.

TRACKMAN™ and PIPETMAN® M were the new featured products of the sales meeting this year. TRACKMAN, a duo-plate pipetting tracker for use with 96 and 384 well microplates, was released November 2009. The TRACKMAN lights the way as you pipette to ensure you do not lose track of where you are.

PIPETMAN M was released in April 2010. PIPETMAN M is as simple as the PIPETMAN® P, with enhanced ergonomic features and fully motorized user-friendly functionality. PIPETMAN® M is the first of its kind with expanded flexibility, several GLP features and a universal tip holder.

Spring 2010 Golden PIPETMAN Award Winner

The spring 2010 winner of The Golden PIPETMAN Award is Geoffrey Hart. Hart received his Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry from Bates College in 2002. In 2006 he received a Graduate School Fellowship. He is currently working on his research thesis on T-cell development at the University of Minnesota.

The Golden PIPETMAN is an award given at the University of Minnesota to an outstanding microbiology, immunology and cancer biology (MICaB) graduate student each semester.

The student who receives this award shows great leadership skills and has contributed to the excellence of the MICaB program. The contribution can be in the form of publications, outside funding and service to the program.

The recipient of this award receives a golden PIPETMAN trophy given by the MICaB program, as well as PIPETMAN Starter kit that is donated by Gilson, Inc.

“The students do truly appreciate the kit and consider it an honor to receive the award,” Louise Shand, Program coordinator said.

Students are nominated for this award by fellow students or MICaB faculty. The recipient is chosen by the MICaB graduate committee members and past recipients of the Golden PIPETMAN award, who are still in the program. The recipient is announced at the MICaB student seminar series.

PIPETMAN® P-Then and now.

Gilson, founded in Middleton, WI in the 1950s, is the industry leader in manual and automated liquid handling. Dr. Warren Gilson developed PIPETMAN®’s unique volumeter in 1963 as an improvement to Gilson respirometers. Together with his son, Dr. Robert Gilson, they invented what became known as the PIPETMAN, the original adjustable-volume pipette, in 1972.

Since then PIPETMAN P has come a long way. P is constructed of quality materials, to ensure durability, accuracy and precision. The body of the pipette is made of strong PVDF plastic, which is resistant to harsh chemicals and limits the transfer of heat from your hand to the pipette. PIPETMAN P is the original world standard in accuracy and precision in pipetting. The pipette uses a unique dry seal technology, to ensure air-tightness and long-term performance without the use of grease on the piston. It offers an easy-to-read volumeter with a direct volume reading in decimal digits to prevent mistakes when setting the volume.

The PIPETMAN P has evolved over time; the first models did not have a tip ejector; so tips would have to be removed by hand. Today the P series PIPETMAN pipettes are equipped with a standard tip ejector; P2 and P10 models come standard with a dual position tip ejector for use with long (DL10) or short (D10) tips. The tip holder on the PIPETMAN is now universal and allows for a secure fit of most brands of tips, so there is no need for a dedicated tip brand.

For almost 40 years Gilson has continued in its commitment to provide innovative, quality products to researchers worldwide. The complete line of PIPETMAN pipettes and tips are available at www.pipetman.com.
